Introduction and Strategic Goal
As part of its national expansion across Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, and London, the Eastern Sudan Community Association (ESCA-UK) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of legal and charitable governance. To achieve this, ESCA worked with Salford CVS to put on a special safeguarding workshop for its leaders and volunteers.
Participation and Commitment
The session was attended by 12 dedicated volunteers (9 men and 3 women), reflecting the association’s geographic diversity, with 9 participants from Manchester and 3 who traveled from Birmingham.
In an inspiring demonstration of the charity’s spirit, all 12 participants chose to self-fund their travel and personal expenses, viewing this training as a vital personal and professional milestone. Collectively, the team invested 72 volunteer hours in a single day to ensure community safety.
Learning Outcomes (LO1 – LO5)
Under the expert guidance of Liz Atkinson, the team successfully achieved the following objectives:
LO1 & LO2: Understanding the current legislative context of Working Together to Safeguard Children and the shared responsibility of community agencies.
LO3: Increasing knowledge of UK policies, legislation, and safeguarding procedures.
LO4: Mastering the professional recording of information and the formal referral process.
LO5: Understanding the impact of trauma on practitioners and the critical importance of self-care within the VCSE (Voluntary, Community, and Social Enterprise) sector.
Organizational Impact
By standardizing safeguarding procedures across its regional hubs, ESCA-UK continues to build its capacity as a "Trusted Bridge" for the Sudanese community. This training guarantees that all activities for children and young adults occur within a safe, professional, and legally compliant framework.
Acknowledgements
ESCA-UK extends its sincere gratitude to Salford CVS for its hospitality and professional support. Special thanks to Liz Atkinson for her engaging delivery and for making complex legal frameworks accessible and practical for our team.
