ESCA Vaccination Awareness Event

Introduction:

White City Community Centre hosted a community engagement and awareness event focused on seasonal flu vaccination, organised in partnership between the Eastern Sudan Community Association (ESCA) in London and Nubian Life. This initiative reflects ESCA’s ongoing commitment to improving health literacy, promoting preventive healthcare, and supporting underserved communities.

ESCA Community is pleased to collaborate with the National Health Service (NHS) to support residents and strengthen community wellbeing. The Association is proud to work in partnership with the NHS to improve health outcomes and enhance wellbeing across the community.

Objectives:

The main objectives of the event were to:

  • Increase awareness of seasonal flu vaccination.

  • Provide accurate and accessible public health information.

  • Address vaccine hesitancy and combat misinformation.

  • Strengthen partnerships between community organisations and health services.

  • Encourage informed decision-making regarding vaccination.

Attendance and Engagement

The event attracted more than 110 residents from the W12 area, reflecting strong community interest in vaccination and health education.

Representatives from the National Health Service (NHS) also attended, reinforcing the importance of collaborative public health engagement and community participation.

Programme Overview

The programme opened with remarks by Ryan Idris, Youth Secretary of ESCA, followed by a welcome address from Jaz Brown, Director of Nubian Life.

The keynote presentation was delivered by Dr Dean Lindsay (MA RGN), Senior Lead for Health Protection and Public Health at Hammersmith & Fulham Council. The session covered essential information on:

  • Infection prevention.

  • Risks associated with seasonal flu.

  • The importance of vaccination in protecting vulnerable groups and reducing the spread of infection.

Evaluation Findings

A total of 46.43% of attendees completed evaluation forms.

The findings showed that:

  • More than 25% had previously received a flu vaccination.     

  • 21.43% reported an improved understanding of flu vaccination.

  • 21.43% stated that they would now consider receiving the vaccine.     

  • 10.71% indicated that they did not intend to receive the vaccine.

  • 11.6% remained undecided about vaccination.     

  • 15.18% expressed distrust of or reluctance towards vaccines.

  • 2.68% reported a lack of trust in the National Health Service (NHS).

  • 9.82% preferred not to disclose their views.

These findings highlight positive improvements in awareness while also demonstrating ongoing challenges related to vaccine hesitancy within the community.

Community Impact

The event demonstrated the strong positive impact of collaboration between community organisations and public health services.

It contributed to:

  • Improving access to trusted health information.

  • Encouraging dialogue around vaccination and preventive healthcare.

Notably, this was the first joint initiative between ESCA and organisations operating within the Hammersmith & Fulham Council area, marking an important step towards building sustainable partnerships in public health delivery.

Additional Activities

To enhance community engagement, the event included:

  • Face painting and recreational activities for children.

  • A complimentary community lunch.

  • Opportunities for social interaction and relationship building.

These activities helped create a welcoming and inclusive environment that encouraged participation from families and individuals of all ages.

Conclusion and Future Commitment

The event concluded with thanks and appreciation to all participants, volunteers, partners, and supporters.

The Eastern Sudan Community Association (ESCA) and its partners reaffirmed their commitment to delivering future health awareness programmes that promote health education, community engagement, and overall wellbeing.

The Association also remains committed to working in partnership with the National Health Service (NHS) and other relevant stakeholders to reduce health inequalities and improve positive health outcomes across the community.
